Neighbors investing in neighbors, on purpose
We exist because the residents of the Spruce Pine Housing Authority deserve more than a roof — they deserve a thriving community built by, with, and for them.
How The Hive came to be
The Hive began as a neighborhood-based creative community space Founded as a partnership between the Spruce Pine Housing Authority (SPHA) and Penland School of Craft
The Hive is a youth and family community and resource center located within the Walnut Avenue Apartments, located in Spruce Pine, NC, and managed by the Spruce Pine Housing Authority. Our goal is to serve the apartment community through dynamic programs shaped in conversation with residents. We serve youth and families through after school programming, teen leadership development activities, art workshops, gardening programs, community meals, field trips, and academic support.
We are actively pursuing incorporation as a nonprofit with the state of North Carolina so that we may apply to Internal Revenue Service for 501(c)(3) public-charity status. We file annually, govern transparently, and answer to our neighbors first.
Six values, every day, every decision
Residents First
Every program is designed with resident input. We do not bring services to the complex — we build them with the complex.
Radical Hospitality
Every neighbor is welcome at The Hive. No application, no income test, no judgment — just a door that opens.
Transparent Stewardship
We publish our impact, file annual reports, and share our financials openly with donors, grantors, and the community.
Local Partnership
We don't compete with Spruce Pine's existing nonprofits — we connect, refer, and collaborate so residents get the best.
Long-Haul Commitment
We are not a pop-up program. The Hive is here for the long term, growing with the residents we serve.
Your Privacy Matters
The Hive never shares your personal information with third parties. To stop receiving communications from us, simply reply STOP to any email or text message and you will be removed from all future communications immediately.
